Libre-Prisen wants to reward and elevate the forces that work to promote the open and free society in a time when digital tools, artificial intelligence and algorithms are used by both private and state forces to challenge our basic civil rights.
The award is given for an effort that strengthens democratic bodies' and the public's insight into and control of the data, systems and companies that shape our present and future.
The award was created in 2019 by Dansih member of Parliament, Lisbeht Bech-Nielsen and editor in chief Peter Christian Bech-Nielsen.
In 2020 the first award was given to Journalist Jakob Sorgenfri Kjær from the danish newspaper Politiken, for his unfolding of the usage of wrongfull telecommunication-data in the danish police and prosecuters office.
In 2021 Libre-prisen awarded the Executive vice-president of the European Commission, for her work with regulating tech-giants and securing basic civil rights in the digital age.
The third award was in 2022 given to Whistleblower Frances Haugen. Haugen highlighted the problematic and harmfull algorithmes in the Meta companies, Facebook and Instagram.
